Statement by NSD Regarding the Obama Administration's Declaration that DOMA Section 3 is Unconstitutional

National Stonewall Democrats applauds today’s announcement by the Obama Administration that it believes Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional and that classifications based on sexual orientation should be subject to a higher standard of scrutiny.

“Like many Americans, the President has been doing a lot of soul-searching around marriage equality and we’re very pleased that he has taken this crucial step toward the ultimate overturn of DOMA,” said Michael Mitchell, NSD Executive Director. “DOMA, like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, has been a heavy burden on the LGBT community, as well as blight on the American ideals of liberty, freedom and equality.

"The President campaigned on the overturn of both DADT and DOMA and we’re happy to see him working to keep the latter promise like he did the first. While there are some who would say that this move comes late, we counter that this would not be happening at all with a Republican in the White House.

“I speak for all of our members when I say that this is incredibly welcome news."

NSD Board Member Appointed to DC Mayor's LGBT Affairs Office

National Stonewall Democrats would like to congratulate Jeffrey Richardson, NSD board member and Gertrude Stein Democratic Club President, on his appointment as Director of the Office of LGBT Affairs for Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray. Richardson, a well-known LGBT activist in DC, has helped strengthen the Stein Democrats as a powerhouse in the District political scene.

"Jeffrey is a valued and trusted leader in the Stonewall Democrats family and is the perfect choice for the job," said Melissa Sklarz, Co-Chair of the NSD board. "In choosing Jeffrey as his new LGBT liaison, Mayor Gray continues his strong leadership as a pro-equality Democrat. We need someone like Jeffrey as we head into a Congress with a GOP-led House that will likely start making moves to limit or kill marriage equality in the District through the appropriations process.”

“We wish him great success in his new role.”

Statement by National Stonewall Democrats regarding today’s vote by the GOP-led House to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“The GOP has yet to show the American people a plan to reform health care that lowers costs and puts patients first, but they have all the time in the world, apparently, to repeal a commonsense, popular law,” said Michael Mitchell, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director. “As expected, the GOP-led house voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act in a display of showmanship for the anti-government sliver of their base, and as a nod to big insurance companies who pad their campaign coffers.

“Left out of the equation are literally millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions that would be excluded, millions of young people who will be knocked off their parent’s insurance and the taxpayers who will have to foot the estimated $145 billion tab if the law is repealed.

“Also left out are LGBT people with pre-existing conditions who are not able to access the insurance plans of their partners, which they would be able to do if our relationships were recognized.

“Three Democrats – Mike Ross (AR), Dan Boren (OK), Mike McIntyre (NC) – unfortunately voted with the Republicans. We will remember.”

Statement by National Stonewall Democrats and the Southern Arizona Stonewall Democrats on the Shooting Today at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Event

“We at National Stonewall Democrats are shocked at the news of the shooting at an event involving Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8),” said NSD Executive Director Michael Mitchell. “We know that an act like this affects an entire community and we are holding all the parties affected in our thoughts and prayers at this incredibly difficult time.”

National Stonewall Democrats statement on Bexar County Democratic Party Chair Dan Ramos’ offensive comments about Stonewall Democrats

“Three words came to mind when I heard that Dan Ramos had called the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio ‘Nazis’ and ‘termites:’ shocking, deplorable and sad,” said Olga Hernandez, National Stonewall Democrats PAC Co-Chair, and a longtime member of the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio. “I really can’t fathom why Ramos would stoop to such a level, especially against fellow Democrats, and especially since Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio have been such good foot soldiers for the Democratic Party in Bexar County and in Texas.”

“We take the part of our mission that says that we hold Democrats accountable very seriously, and this is one of those moments,” said NSD Executive Director Michael Mitchell. “The actions by Chairman Ramos are reprehensible and serve no purpose but to divide our party. We support calls for his resignation from the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio, as well as from Boyd Ritchie, Texas Democratic Party Chair.”
