Stonewall Democrats were on the ground in Minnesota working to turn out pro-equality voters for Democratic candidate Al Franken - and our work helped secure his victory.
Yesterday, the Minnesota Supreme Court confirmed what we already knew -
that Al Franken defeated Norm Coleman last November in their race for
the U.S. Senate. Senator Franken is a passionate champion of equal rights - including the freedom to marry - and we expect Senator Franken to be one of our community's strongest allies in the U.S. Senate.
Stonewall Democrats played an integral role in Minnesota in 2008 and in the election of Senator Al Franken. Two months out from Election Day, we placed staff on the ground in the Minneapolis suburbs - Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District - to identify and turn-out pro-equality voters. Our efforts turned out thousands of pro-equality voters and made the difference in this campaign.
Al Franken in the U.S. Senate is a tangible result of the work we did in Minnesota. Having Senator Franken represent Minnesota means an additional vote for an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act. It means an extra vote to pass Hate Crimes legislation, to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.
Senator Franken's election shows what Stonewall Democrats can do with their hard work. Now we must work the phones, write the letters, organize organize constituency meetings, and continue building our
infrastructure for the 2010 midterms to hold our Democratic leadership
accountable to advance pro-equality legislation.
